Each course of therapy is unique; therapy with you would be based on your particular concerns, needs, circumstances, and goals. However, you can always count on me to:
- Listen to you sensitively, non-judgmentally, and respectfully, helping you feel more comfortable, understood, and accepted. (It is not unusual to feel nervous before you start, especially if you haven’t been in counseling before.)
- Offer you new ideas and perspectives about what you’re having trouble with and how you might be able to manage better and feel better. This often involves enhancing your awareness and understanding of your feelings and thoughts and how they relate to each other, and providing new ways to deal with whatever you're struggling with.
In couples and marital therapy, partners often start therapy with different perspectives. I help each partner in some of the same ways that I help people in individual therapy. Additionally, though, I help couples by:
- Listening respectfully to EACH partner's perspective, enhancing each partner’s understanding of him/herself and her/his partner;
- Enhancing communication, often by (i) slowing it down and (ii) identifying and interrupting destructive patterns in the ways partners react to each other; and
- Encouraging related changes.
