Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence

Chade-Meng Tan has written a wonderful book, Search Inside Yourself (www.siybook.com/), that is very consistent with my therapeutic approach.  It teaches mindfulness (an enhanced way of paying attention to oneself and one's experience) as a central way to develop "emotional intelligence" - skills for managing one's emotional and interpersonal life that complement traditional (intellectual) intelligence (see the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, or google "emotional intelligence").  Meng quotes Victor Frankl (a Holocaust survivor who developed an "existential" approach to psychotherapy): “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom” (in Frankl's book, Man's Search for Meaning).   In therapy, with enhanced attention to one's present experience and to one's feelings, I help people identify new options, new ways to respond, and new ways to live.
